Sermon by Rev. Dr. K. A. Slayton, Sr.
“A Mother’s Discontent”

In this sermon I shift my attention to the mother’s of black men/boys who have been unjustly murdered in the public square. By way of being transparent, this was a very difficult sermon for me to preach. Keep in mind that a great majority of my congregation is non black and I am an unapologetically black preacher everyday of the week. Seriously, I tend to read the scriptures from a lens that is tented by my context in this nation as an African American male. As a result, I’m extremely conscious to not overwhelm the sensitivities of the congregation. But then on the weekend of Mother’s Day 2020 the world was exposed to the video from Georgia showing the death of Ahmaud Arbery. How could I approach the sacred desk with the pain of what we’d witnessed and still not (in the words of Beecher Hicks) not bleed on the people? (I had no idea at the time that the climate in this nation would shift dramatically on the issue of race in the coming days) Please take a listen and feel free to share your thoughts and comments.
