Northwood-Appold UMC Fight for Fair Share Maryland Legislation

The 2025 Maryland General Assembly is fast approaching its session’s end. Still there remains much work to be settled. The issue of prosecuting juveniles remains an ongoing policy debate, meanwhile a slew of policies are being considered to address those in the immigrant community. Although Northwood Appold UMC does not have a formally established Social Justice Committee this year they have taken steps to more actively engage through advocacy.

Historically the Black Church has played a central role in advocating for social justice, community uplift, and addressing systemic inequalities. Supporting economic justice aligns with these values by helping to address the historical and ongoing economic disparities faced by Black communities. It was in this vein led by their pastor Rev. Dr. K. A. Slayton that members of the congregation descended on the Maryland State Capitol in mass support of passing the Fair Share Maryland legislation. If passed this legislation would close many of the loopholes used by major corporations to skirt paying their Fair Share in Maryland taxes. NAUMC joined several other state-wide advocacy organizations in Annapolis and demonstrated a powerful presence in their protest.

Participating congregants were made aware that economic justice involves advocating for fair wages, access to quality education, affordable housing, and equal opportunities for wealth-building. It involves lifting every voice in support of policies that impact our communities beyond the walls of the church. By supporting economic justice, the Northwood Appold UMC hopes to launch a tradition of fighting for the dignity and well-being of its members and the broader community. They truly believe and have heard messages from the pulpit that informs them that it is their support and their voices that will empower individuals, improve economic stability, and contribute to a more equitable society overall.
