Last week a wealthy, well-connected, white male was brought to justice. For years justice had been looking for him, but seemingly failed to be any match against his power and privilege. But on June 7, 2021 the same man called the police to share that his wife and son had been murdered. I have to assume that his call was an attempt to contact Justice for help. Apparently in his world of privilege justice had always been on his side. In his world justice was blind and susceptible to being manipulated by other forces. But on some rare occasions in this life, Justice calls us.
After leading a lifestyle of comfort in his ability to lie about financial crimes and deception. He then resorted to blaming his poor behavior on drug use. But people close to him and not just family are dead. And I’m assuming the drugs dictating that he benefits financially from their deaths to feed the addiction. But Justice was more than suspicious.
When you come from a family of privilege that is unfamiliar with “accountability” and the consequences of poor decisions. The decisions, themselves may, over time begin leave a trail of devastation that prevents demands Justice remove the veils from her eyes and see the truth.
With all of the evidence of years past somehow this man could still be described as a nice man and great lawyer by those that worked in the actual courts. His relationships and ties ran deep and in many ways his demise signaled the unfortunate leveling of the scales of justice. In that smalltown courthouse God balanced the deck and caused the trail of deceit and corruption to lead him straight to the jailhouse.
When I consider the imagery of this case it becomes pretty difficult for me not to envision the future awaiting our fragile democracy, if we don’t make the necessary adjustments to our loyalties around this idea of Trumpism. Clearly, there is a mindset developed in some people born with privilege and let’s be honest, white skin that justice belongs to them. And as a result, they believe they are above the law. Especially, when they hold a position of power that allows them to redefine what justice looks like. But I hope we are paying attention. For you see whenever privileged white males are forced to deal with reality and consequences of their unjust ways, they are prone to destroy everything around them, even if it means killing their own relatives.
Oddly, its nothing new, since the time of King Herod the Great, rich wealthy white men have resulted to such unbelievable behaviors. In 29 BC Herod killed his wife, sons, and in-laws. But he was not the only one, there was Henry VIII who killed two of his wives and other family members. Then there was Nero (Lucius Domitius Ahenobarbus) who killed his wife and other members of his family. And let’s not forget the Roman Emperor Caligula (Gaius Caesar Germanicus) who actually believed that he was a God.
But no matter how mad these persons become or any of us for that matter, at some point justice will come calling us by name. Let’s just hope its not too late for America as we continue to flirt with a careless and dangerous privileged white male who has no problem taking us all down with him should justice come calling his name.
